RV FAQ’s

1. What counts as an RV?

An RV includes motorhomes and recreational trailers used for camping or short-term living.

2. Driver’s Licence Rules — What You Need to Drive an RV

Small & Medium RVs

If your RV weighs 11,000 kg (about 24,000 lbs) or less, you can drive it with a regular (Class G, E, or F) licence — no extra steps needed.

RVs Between 11,000–14,000 kg

You need an RV endorsement on a Class G, E, or F licence.

To get it, you must:
Complete the Recreational Vehicle Learning Module (RVLM), a short training course (about 45 minutes, ~$23.75), and
Bring your certificate to a DriveTest centre.

This new endorsement option makes Ontario’s rules more flexible and brings them in line with other provinces.

Large RVs (over 14,000 kg) -**Recommend Taking your DZ Fast Track with us and get your full DZ license**Call Shannon 705-561-1464 for more information and why

You must take a Class D licence with an RV restriction. This is a special version of the commercial Class D licence limited to RVs only.
Requirements include:
– Vision and medical checks,
– Completing the RV learning module,
– A road test in a heavy RV over 14,000 kg.

Existing Full Commercial Licences

If you already have a full Class A, B, C, or D licence, you can drive RVs regardless of weight.

3. The Recreational Vehicle Learning Module (RVLM)

This is required training before you can get:
– An RV endorsement, or
– A Class D with RV restriction.
It teaches safe RV driving and operation and takes about 45 minutes online or in person.
You’ll need to retake it when renewing your endorsement, unless you’re under 80 and took it recently.

4. Towing RV Trailers

You can tow non-powered RV trailers with a Class G licence if:

  • The trailer and tow vehicle combined weigh 11,000 kg or less, and
The vehicle and trailer meet specific weight and equipment requirements (trailer certified to safety standards, truck not too heavy, etc.).
If the trailer combination is heavier or doesn’t meet the requirements, you’ll need a Class A or Class A Restricted licence.
