Wikwemikong Heavy Equipment Program

Wikwemikong Heavy Equipment Program

Proud to be part of the Wikwemikong Heavy Equipment Program!

Throughout an intense 5-week training period, these students received up to 60 hours of machine operation shifts (Kaboni pits) as well as in-class instructional theory.

Today, they are putting those skills to use and assisting in the new construction of residential housing on Genevieve Street. As the student’s progress through the field portion of the course, the tasks required on the machines become more involved and challenging to ensure that they have the required skills to operate the machine in a real work situation.

From left to right we have: Elijah Manitowabi, Travis Assiniwe, Alex Shigwadja, Zane Pitawanakwat, Lawrence Pitawanakwat, Serge Gaudreault (instructor), Louie Pheasant, Shane Cooper (Employment and Training Officer)

These are just the first round of students who have applied themselves into the program.

The second round of trainees begins next week and will be given a whole different environment to work in, in Wiikwemkoong.

Also included in this program is a 2-week DZ driver’s training course. Drivers with a DZ license can drive fire trucks, straight trucks, cement trucks, dump trucks, garbage trucks, and even rescue trucks. A definite demand of employment requirements in Wiikwemkoong.

If you see any of these students around the community, congratulate them on their achievements!!

In partnership with Wii-ni n’guch-tood LMS, Wiikwemkoong Ontario Works, Public Works, and Northern Academy of Transportation Training.
