What is a D Drivers License?

When you get your Class D Drivers License, you can drive a motor vehicle exceeding 11,000 kilograms (24,000 lb) gross weight or any combination of motor vehicle exceeding a total gross weight of 11,000 kilograms (24,000 lb) and towed vehicle not exceeding a total gross weight of 4,600 kilograms (10,000 lb).

Requirements to get a DZ License

In order to apply for a Class D licence, you need to:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • have a valid Ontario licence other than G1, G2, M, M1 or M2
  • pass an vision test
  • submit a medical report
  • pass a knowledge test about operating large trucks
  • pass a road test using a vehicle that meets the requirements for a Class D

Jobs you can get with a DZ License

Once you obtain your DZ License, there are various driving jobs that you can then apply for including:
  • dump trucks
  • straight trucks
  • cement trucks
  • garbage trucks

If you are interested in driving any truck/ tractor trailer combination, consider getting your full Class AZ (air brake endorsement) truck licence.

Funding options for DZ Drivers License

There are different funding options available for people who may be laid off, or are starting a new career. From the Second Career funding, to the Canada Ontario Job Grant, you could qualify for subsidies and grants to help make getting your DZ license even easier and more affordable.
